Safe Exercises during Pregnancy

Pregnancy is a wonderful experience for mothers to be. But, you don’t have to experience all the usual symptoms that pregnancy often brings. There are some safe and easy exercises to do when you’re pregnant. Why should you exercise during pregnancy? Exercise helps ease backaches, minimize fatigue and reduce labor pains.

As with any form of exercise, make sure you stretch. Don’t over stretch your body during pregnancy, but stretch your muscles to a comfortable level. It’s important to keep your heart rate level below 140 beats per minute. If you get too hot during your workout, stop and cool down. Your body will produce more heat because of the increased blood flow. It’s important to remember not to overheat your body—it may induce a miscarriage. Keeping track of your pregnancy week by week will help you judge the best time during your pregnancy to workout.

Taking a brisk walk is a good workout for a pregnant woman. Utilize the “talk test” to ensure you’re not overworking your body. The talk test is speaking normally without having to take a deep breath. This will let you know if you’re walking at the proper speed. Swimming is another great workout for pregnancy. Being suspended in the water helps ease your joints. Performing cardio exercises in water is easier to do. Swim for twenty minutes per day at least five times a week. Avoid hot tubs, however. You don’t have to exercise alone. Some women find that joining a class makes exercising fun to do. Good and safe pregnancy exercises help keep you—and your baby—in good health.

The Dangers of Self-diagnosis

Medical

Although the internet is a wealth of information on all sorts of topics, there are many dangers involved in using the internet to self-diagnose.

Health care practitioners constantly warn against the perils of using information gathered on the internet to diagnose oneself with an illness. Many people do not follow up on the information they have found with a trained professional. This can lead to an array of issues including wrong diagnosis, over diagnosis, or even late diagnosis. For there can also be a slackening of medical up keep when a person relies heavily on the internet for medical advice.

Many symptoms are present in many different illnesses, therefore an online diagnosis, which only requires a person to enter their symptoms will never be completely accurate. Because many illnesses have similar symptoms, a battery of tests is often required in order to come to an accurate diagnosis. Many symptoms could be the cause of fluctuations in mood and environment, something which a website cannot test for.

The information on many online medical sites does not have to be regulated in any way. Because of this a person cannot be assured that the information they are accessing is 100% accurate. This is one of the primary causes for misinformation and why self-diagnosing through websites can be dangerous. Just because a website looks professional does not mean that its contents are written by professionals.

If you are feeling an array of symptoms on a regular basis, the best advice is to see a health care professional as soon as you can in order to receive an accurate diagnosis.

What is Holistic Medicine?

The Holistic Approach of Alternative Medicine ...

Image via Wikipedia

Interested in a medical career with a difference? Then a career in holistic medicine may be what you are looking for.

Holistic medicine encourages a medical issue to be looked at from all different angles. Instead of just taking the illness into account, holistic medicine takes into account all other aspects of the person as well. These aspects include:

  • physical aspects
  • nutrition
  • emotional
  • environmental
  • social
  • spiritual and other lifestyle influences

Holistic medicine holds the belief that an illness has more than one cause, and therefore all causes should be looked, assessed and treated appropriately. The term ‘mind, body, and soul’ is a great way to describe the holistic approach.

Holistic medicine is commonly grouped under the umbrella term ‘alternative medicine’. It is also referred to as ‘new age’ medicine. This gives people the impression that there is a spiritual practice base for it. Although holistic medicine does address spiritual beliefs and issues in its practice, there is no one religion or spiritual belief that forms a base for the practice.

What was once a practice which was shunned by mainstream doctors, holistic medicine is slowly becoming a more accepted part of medical culture. In fact, there a many physicians and general practitioners today who welcome the integration of alternative therapies with mainstream medicine.

Holistic medicine provides alternative ways to treat illnesses, of the physical, emotional and mental kind for those who do not wish to utilize the offerings of mainstream medicine. If this sounds like something you would want to offer a client, then a career in holistic medicine could be right up your alley.

There are many things to avoid when pregnant to ensure the health of your baby. Many medical and health professionals recommend avoiding certain foods as well.

Here are the foods that recommended to be avoided when pregnant.

  • Soft cheeses – unless they have been cooked thoroughly.
  • Any sort of cold meat both cooked and processed.
  • Store bought salads that have been pre-packaged.
