Advice is the second language of all parents. It’s a collection of words, sighs and persuasions. Such persuasions rarely succeed, however, when it comes to advising teens on their career choices. Young minds already overflow with goals and desires. So, they think, “What more do I need?”
Choosing a future career requires more than childlike enthusiasm, though. It demands guidance from parents.
Discuss Interests
Teenage ambition knows no limits. It must not, however, be without focus. Discuss with your teen what sparks his or her interests and find the common threads. In doing this, you’ll help your teen find interests that fit together under a particular field or career path. Your teen can then narrow the list of possibilities.
Provide Research
Too often, teens let their passions lead them toward degrees for which they’re not prepared. Parents must offer research and information. Show your teen how easy it is to get a medical job with Soliant Healthcare, and how challenging it may be to find a high paying job as a musician. Understanding the study requirements, potential salaries and required degrees makes it easier for teens to choose a realistic career goal.
Offer Experience
Choosing a college major or career path seems like a simple task for teens. They talk about an abstract love for certain fields, and think that’s enough to sustain them through college. Experience, however, can often tame affection because it shows what a job is like in real life. Seek out work-placement programs, internships and similar opportunities before attempting a degree program. This will save time and money.
Finding the right career isn’t easy. Parents can shape the process, however, and offer support.
